COMPASS faculty member Albert T. Liu was recently featured in AIChE’s Member Spotlight series, which recognizes members whose leadership, service, and commitment are helping shape the future of chemical engineering.
Liu, a faculty member in the University of Michigan Department of Chemical Engineering, serves as Chair of AIChE’s Nanoscale Science and Engineering Forum (NSEF). In the interview, he discusses what inspired him to become an AIChE community leader, the importance of mentorship and interdisciplinary collaboration, and his work to introduce more undergraduate students to opportunities in nanoscale science and engineering.
Liu also highlights the role professional communities can play in connecting students, faculty, and industry professionals — creating opportunities for mentorship, research collaboration, professional visibility, and new ideas.
“By planting the seed early, we hope to demystify the field and cultivate a more inclusive, informed, and inspired next generation of NSEF participants,” Liu shared.
