A $10M European Research Council (ERC) grant was awarded to study complex biological systems of chiral nanoparticles to disrupt the formation of the networks of amyloid peptides formed and biofilms of antibiotic resistant bacteria. The ERC Synergy grants are the high-risk-high-reward research projects awarded to small teams of scientists. This project co-lead by Luis Liz-Marzan (CIC BiomaGUNE), Sara Bals (University of Antwerp), and Nicholas Kotov (University of Michigan). The ERC grant will build on the University of Michigan expertise in describing nanoparticles with complex chiral shapes using Graph Theory and their ability to form biomimetic complexes with proteins.
